ALEXA.com was founded in 1996 by Brewster Kahle and Bruce Gilliat. It is a search engine & directory that ranked websites in a different way. Unlike Google which used page rank as its search algorithm for ranking sites, Alexa used tool bar to gather information about websites. It offers information about the visitors for the sites that are ranked below 1, 00,000. This information includes statistical data about the number of visitors in the range of days, weeks, months & years. With its Reach feature we can know the site's percentage of global Internet users. It also gives ranking data for a site globally & also in its top performing countries and top internal links which are accessed by the users around the world.

The complete ranking algorithm of Alexa is based on the Alexa toolbar installed in various browsers like Internet Explore, Mozilla, Opera browser, Netscape are not supported. Many don't accept this algorithm as it may not be the accurate data. Most webmasters exchange page views from friends by using Alexa toolbar. This practice makes Alexa difficult to give accurate rankings.  There are scripts available on net to increase alexa rankings without any traffic.

The data of daily page views are gathered but the ranking is based on three months of collective statistical data from millions of user who have installed Alexa toolbar. It uses page views as the main criteria. Traffic rank is compiled for each site and are compared with their previous ranks and listed in the top 1,000,000 websites. Alexa treats sub domains of the domain as the same for including in its database. Alexa counts on page views of websites; if the site has been viewed multiple times on the same IP then it is counted only once and not multiple page views.

Marketing strategies has been playing a key role in developing business. There are many search engines like Google, Yahoo where people pour in get indexed in them. Alexa is also one of them now. They are turning back to Alexa as its becoming famous day to day. Since it is all concentrated on page views, there is no need to worry about back links. But back links play a vital role in other search engines. The main difference between Google and Alexa is the higher your rank in Google you are at the top, but in Alexa its vice-versa the lower your rank makes your site higher. You might want to know how your rival is performing and want to compare. There is an option where Alexa lets you and your competitor's url and lets you the compare both the sites. Advertising has been made simpler since Alexa. Now it is possible to see the ranking of Websites and then making advertisement deals with them

How to check your Alexa rankings? Just checkout Alexa.com and type in your site to see whether your site is indexed. If indexed it shows statistical data about the site if your site is in top 1, 00,000. If not it gives very less information about the site. Is there any way to Improve Alexa Rankings? Yes, the main criteria are to reach visitors having Alexa toolbar installed. Exchange links with your friends to make sure your site is reached globally. Participate in Forums and use your Website as your signature link. Keep a bookmarking widget on your site. So that people click on to post to various bookmarking sites. Telling your friends to view your site regularly is a cheap way of increasing your rank. But these kinds of tasks have been reported as inappropriate ways to increase site's reputation. But to increase your Website's fame you should not only depend on Alexa. But submit your site to various directories & search engines giving your site wide exposure.

How to support Alexa? Install a toolbar yourself on your browser. If you keep your site as home page, your site will gain page views. Place a link back to Alexa on your website. There is a widget provided by Alexa, download and install in your Website or Blog and it gives you data on your site itself. It is much easier now to know the rankings to you and people visiting your site.

Page Rank Explained PDF Print E-mail

Page Rank is what is used to judge the popularity of all the websites on the web. It is very important to have a high page rank, and these ranks range from 1-10. Achieving a PR of 10 takes a lot of hard work and time and isn’t easy by any means. To build your PR you will need to gain valuable links from other sites. Google judges the importance of each webpage by how many different votes it has. Page rank is one of many of the different ways that Google judges where you will appear on the search rankings. The higher your PR is the higher you will be in the search results.

When your trying to gain links for your PR, it is very important too gain links that have value to them. There are many links Google will filter out if they think it has to do with a link farm of some sorts. Having links from these link farms can also have you penalized by Google, if you have any links on your webpage from a known link farm then Google will penalize you.

Inbound Links

Inbound links are links in which someone has put a link on their webpage that leads the person to your webpage. This is one of the ways you can increase your page rank, its important to try and get as many inbound links as you possibly can. Google won’t penalize you for inbound links because you can’t control who links to you, so since this is the case you will want as many inbound links you can get. When you have control of where the link is going to be directed you will want to direct it towards your most targeted page. All the pages that are linked to that page will gain some PR but for the most part the page that is linked to will get the majority of the PR addition. It’s a great idea to try and link all your sites pages together so that when you get inbound links all of your pages will benefit from the PR injection. For people already with sites try linking your pages together if you don’t already do so and see if the PR goes up any for your under producing pages.

Outbound Links

Your outbound links believe it or not drain your PR, to counter this try and make sure all your outbound links are reciprocal. If the link is reciprocal it can gain or lose PR so you have to be careful with whom you have links with. You don’t want to be linking your site to a link farm this will only penalize you from Google. If Google decides to penalize you then this could mean some bad results for some time. If you don’t want your PR to be drained by Google there are ways to set-up outbound links so that Google can’t read it properly. There are three main ways for anyone to do this and they are as followed.

  1. Form actions – A form action can point to any HTML page on any site.
  2. JavaScript – Load code with the URL links into it.
  3. “REL” Attribute – This attribute tells Google to ignore the link completely.

Forum Promotion Tips PDF Print E-mail

If you’re reading this, then you’ve probably made your own forum and things aren’t going as you wanted too, or you just need a few tips on how to get more users to post on your forums.

It doesn’t matter if your forum is on a certain niche, or if it’s a general discussion forum, you’ll definitely have competition in any niche you’ll create your board. How will you bring visitors to you? Probably the most important thing is being unique. If you’ve got unique features, a great layout, several great categories, good moderating team and decent rules you’ll probably attract people to your forum. But, is it enough? If you’re just starting, you really need a bit of advertising to bring internet users to your forum, and this could be done by organizing small contests or maybe you could offer free emails @yourforum.com and things like these.

It doesn’t matter about what your forum is about, if you’ll discuss about hot topics each day, you’ll definitely get a lot of conversation. Also, if you’ve got an interesting ranking system, users will try to do more and more posts, not spammy ones, to get a new rank. You can use a ranking system that unlocks several features when each users gets several posts. Get your trustable friends, or hire someone to moderate discussions in your forums, and try to answer at any private message or email your users send to you.

General chat and welcome area are a “must have” for almost each forum. New users should make a quick hello thread when they come to your forum and general chat will always be a relaxing area where everyone will come sooner or later. Users are interested in forums where they can create friendships, tell jokes, discuss about themselves or about their hobbies. Also, you should send reminders, or e-mails saying “we miss you here” for users that haven’t been too active lately.

Things like these will show your users that they are wanted on your forum, and it would definitely make them come back. If you’ve got a tech forum, or one that’s in a particular niche, if you’ll bring specialists that would make good quality posts, guests would find a lot of valuable information and would register to your forums just to read and comment those posts. So, if you want more users and more activity to your forums, you should start by following these tips, and then you could move on and link your forum to other communities.
